The next thing I did was to cut off the old bulkhead outrigger. Whilst cutting, I was suddenly surrounded by plumes of dense black smoke. "B******s", I thought, "my grinder's on fire!". No, fortunately not! It turned out that to plug some of the rust-holes in the outrigger, instead of welding a patch on, a previous owner had stuffed it full of bitumen which had promptly caught fire....
Although not very clear, you can see a lump of it in the next photo; the top of it has been coloured rust-red.
By this time I had now found a supplier of paint at www.auto-paint.co.uk. A sample arrived promptly, and I painted a test panel roughly to check the colour. It's good enough, so that's the colour I will use. Turns out to be called Rioja Red...
The petrol tank had now been painted, so I made a start on painting the next batch of bits which included the brake servo, power steering fluid reservoir and the dashboard parcel shelf - even this was rusty! Seems like it was covered in some sort of plastic coating which had started flaking off, so all this was removed and then repainted.
The new offside bulkhead outrigger was then welded in place and painted with primer.
The new nearside bulkhead outrigger was also welded in place, again with the aid of a wooden jig which should enable the bulkhead bolts to line up when the time comes to refit the bulkhead.
